The immigration policies of the Biden administration continue to bring criticism upon both the Democrat president and his party members in Congress.
Biden has already used his power as president to shut down the Remain in Mexico policy that existed during the Trump presidency. The aforementioned measure significantly reduced U.S. asylum fraud; however, Biden reversed this policy, citing it as inhumane and hostile towards migrants.
Republicans warned that a President Biden would only incentivize illegal immigration. Now, these warnings are coming to fruition, as seen by the surge of migrant children arriving at the border without any parents or guardians.
Currently, the GOP is warning that Biden’s immigration reforms are deeply unpopular and will ultimately backfire on Democrats in future elections, per Breitbart News.
“Recruit and Release” Under the Biden Administration
On Sunday, GOP Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas spoke to The Cats Roundtable radio show about Biden’s immigration reforms. Under the current administration, illegal immigrants in Mexico that were placed there during the Trump years are being sought out, returned to the U.S. border, and then released on their own recognizances.
Sen. Cotton described this type of immigration policy as “recruit and release,” something that he views as dangerous and deeply unpopular. The Arkansas Republican furthermore pointed out that while Americans are required to take coronavirus tests in certain airports, illegal immigrants crossing the Southern border don’t have to be tested for COVID-19.

Ultimately, Cotton stated that the best way to go about immigration reform is securing the borders, upholding laws on the books, and ensuring that individuals do not overstay their visas. The GOP senator also warned that if the Biden administration persists with its current “recruit and release” immigration reform, Democrats will suffer “at the ballot box.”
Fixing Immigration Problems at the U.S. Southern Border
Like Sen. Cotton, many Republicans are interested in commonsense immigration reform. However, this is next to impossible with Democrats holding power in both congressional chambers and backing Biden’s immigration policies.

During Cotton’s conversation with The Cats Roundtable, the Arkansas Republican actually stated that Biden needs to re-enact at least some of the immigration policies that existed under the Trump administration. Unfortunately, though, Biden has made clear that he intends to go in the polar opposite direction of Trump on virtually every policy.
