Biden May Get Unexpected White House Rival in Gretchen Whitmer

Joe Biden, who seems set to run for reelection at the age of nearly 82, may get an unlikely competitor in the face of Michigan’s Gretchen Whitmer. She has refused to rule out the possibility of bidding for her party’s presidential nomination.

2024 Democratic Cohort Features Unimpressive Bunch

Sleepy Joe is expected to announce his official 2024 presidential candidacy any week now.

The only candidate of the Democratic Party to have officially announced her bid is spiritual writer and leftist activist Marianne Williamson. Williamson was also a candidate in 2020, but dropped out early on and endorsed Bernie Sanders.

Nonetheless, against that backdrop, one of the prospective Democratic candidates for the presidency, Michigan’s embattled Governor Gretchen Whitmer, has refused to rule out her own White House bid.

Whitmer became recognizable nationally when, in 2020, the FBI arrested 13 men suspected of organizing a plot to kidnap her. Two of them were later convicted on charges of conspiring to abduct her, while three others were convicted on gang membership charges.

Whitmer is presently at the start of her second term as governor of Michigan. This is after she was reelected in the November 2022 midterms with a lead of 11 points on her Republican challenger.

Gretchen Offers Some Banal Deliberations

Whitmer “left the door open” for a potential presidential run. She refused to rule it out in an interview with Jen Psaki, Biden’s former press secretary, on MSNBC.

Whitmer said she wasn’t sure about running for president, but declared she enjoyed “solving problems,” Breitbart News reported.

The host of “Inside with Jen Psaki” noted that Michigan’s governor previously said she wouldn’t run for president in 2024, which is why she asked Whitmer if she could imagine herself as a presidential candidate in “the future.”

“I don’t know,” Whitmer said, adding she couldn’t know what the future would look like.

She then went on to deliver a tirade about how she previously left the Michigan state legislature without thinking she would ever take part in elections again. Yet, she is now in her fifth year as Michigan’s governor.

Whitmer then bragged that she knew herself well and that when she saw a problem and believed she could do “something about it,” she rolls her sleeves to try to do that.

At that point, she pointed out she was 51 years “old,” leading Psaki to interject and correct her that she was “51 years young.” Whitmer, however, went on to explain that at the end of her second term as Michigan’s governor, she would be 55.

At the same time, she noted her own mother died at the end of 59, so nobody knows how long one would be alive. Whitmer insisted she was incredibly happy with where she was “right now.”

That led Psaki to declare that Michigan’s governor had not really ruled out having plans to run for president at some point in the future.
