Nationwide Recall Issued by Trader Joe’s Over Listeria Concerns


In a significant move to ensure consumer safety, Trader Joe’s has issued a nationwide recall of four cheese products due to potential contamination with the bacterium listeria monocytogenes. The recall includes popular items such as Chicken Enchiladas Verde, Cilantro Salad Dressing, Elote Chopped Salad Kit, and Southwest Salad, all of which contain cotija cheese.

The recall comes in the wake of a listeria outbreak that has tragically resulted in two fatalities—one in California and one in Texas. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported that 26 Americans have been sickened, with 23 hospitalizations across 11 states. This situation underscores the importance of rigorous food safety protocols and the need for swift action when potential health risks are identified.

Listeria is a serious infection that can cause severe illness, particularly in pregnant women, newborns, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. While most people who consume contaminated food do not become seriously ill, the infection can lead to critical conditions such as confusion, seizures, and even death if it spreads beyond the gut to the central nervous system.

Trader Joe’s has taken a responsible step by advising customers to either discard any recalled products or return them to the store for a full refund. This proactive approach reflects the company’s commitment to its customers’ well-being and its adherence to high standards of food safety.

The CDC has estimated that approximately 1,600 Americans become infected with listeria each year, with about 260 deaths. These statistics highlight the gravity of the situation and the importance of maintaining vigilance in food production and distribution processes.

Earlier this week, the FDA announced a recall of 61 products, including cheese, yogurt, and sour cream sold under various brand names, which were distributed between June 2014 and December 2023. The agency has urged the public to dispose of any affected products, thoroughly clean refrigerators and surfaces, and seek medical attention if they experience symptoms of listeria infection.

The demographic data collected during the investigation into the outbreak reveals that patients ranged from under one year old to 88 years old, with an average age of 52. Approximately 58 percent of those affected were female, and 42 percent were male. The majority of those affected were white, with a significant portion of the Hispanic community also impacted.

In light of these events, consumers are reminded to remain alert to food recalls and to follow recommended guidelines for food safety. It is crucial for individuals to be informed and proactive in protecting their health and the health of their families from foodborne illnesses.
