US-Russia Backchannel — Europe Benched

Six European heads of state signed a joint statement declaring that peace in Ukraine cannot be decided without Ukraine — as Trump pushes forward with direct US-Russia talks that cut Europe out entirely.

Story Snapshot

  • Leaders from France, Italy, the UK, Germany, Poland, and Finland signed a joint statement saying Ukraine must be included in any peace talks.
  • Ukrainian President Zelenskyy flatly rejected any deal made between the US and Russia without him at the table.
  • US envoy General Keith Kellogg confirmed Europe will be excluded from security assurance discussions — making the exclusion official US policy.
  • Putin dismissed Zelenskyy’s open letter calling for direct talks, calling it “rude” and saying he sees “no point” in a meeting.

Europe Draws a Red Line on Ukraine Talks

Six European leaders signed a joint statement pushing back hard against the US-Russia negotiation framework. The statement, signed by the leaders of France, Italy, the United Kingdom, Germany, Poland, and Finland, declared: “The path to peace in Ukraine cannot be decided without Ukraine.” The leaders also set a concrete starting point for any future talks — the current front line, not Ukraine’s borders before Russia’s 2022 invasion.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz made Europe’s position plain. “Europe is not a pawn, but a sovereign entity, possessing its own interests and values,” he said. French President Macron hosted the group in Paris specifically to coordinate a response to the US push for talks that leave European officials on the sidelines. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen went further, telling the European Parliament that Moscow shows “no real intent” to engage in genuine peace negotiations, and accused Russia of holding a “post-World War II mentality” about Europe as its sphere of influence.

Trump’s Team Moves Forward Anyway

The Trump administration is not slowing down. US envoy General Keith Kellogg confirmed that Europe will be excluded from security assurance discussions — a key part of any lasting deal. That means Europe is locked out not just from the main talks but from the very conversations that would determine who protects Ukraine after a ceasefire. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other US officials have framed the US-Russia bilateral process as progress, treating European objections as background noise rather than a diplomatic obstacle.

From a conservative standpoint, Trump’s approach reflects a clear-eyed America First strategy. The US is not obligated to let European bureaucrats slow down or complicate a deal that could end a costly war. Europe spent years relying on American military protection while lecturing Washington on foreign policy. Trump is simply negotiating directly — without the delays that come from managing a 27-member bloc that can’t even agree internally. Reports suggest France and Italy may be quietly considering resuming their own contacts with Russia, which undermines the “unified European front” narrative.

Putin Rejects Zelenskyy’s Direct Talks Offer

While Europe demands inclusion, Russia is refusing to engage with Ukraine at all. Putin dismissed Zelenskyy’s open letter requesting direct peace talks, calling it “rude” and saying he sees “no point” in a meeting. Putin also laid out a firm condition: peace talks must happen before any ceasefire, arguing that a ceasefire would simply give Ukraine time to regroup and rearm. He dismissed the idea of European nations serving as neutral mediators, pointing out that countries actively arming Ukraine cannot credibly claim to be neutral.

Zelenskyy, for his part, has been equally firm. In a video address and on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” he stated: “I will never accept any decisions between the United States and Russia about Ukraine. Never.” That leaves three parties — the US, Russia, and Ukraine — each drawing hard lines, with Europe demanding a seat at a table that neither Washington nor Moscow is offering them. Whether Trump can bridge that gap and deliver an actual ceasefire remains the central question of the entire effort.
